Misinformation in Latin America and Across the World

Fake news and other forms of digital misinformation are complicating Covid-19 response and undermining governments' ability to address other pressing crises from climate change to HIV/AIDS.

In Latin America and across the world, recent developments in politics and technology have resulted in unprecedented levels of fake news and misinformation circulating online and through encrypted messaging apps such as Whatsapp. These developments present new challenges for policymakers, public health officials, scientists, journalists, and others responsible for communicating facts to the general public.

In this Master Class, Professor D.J. Flynn will discuss prominent cases of misinformation from Latin America, Spain, India, the United States, and elsewhere; why misinformation is often so difficult to refute; and the efficacy of different approaches for correcting misinformation about politics and public health.
