When Real Estate Creates Great Urban Spaces

The real estate industry in Sao Paulo was responsible for building some of the finest privately owned public spaces in the largest city of Brazil. Its boom during the 1950s and 60s put together some of the most ambitious developers with avant-garde architects. Their examples are currently being rediscovered by residents and investors. In this masterclass we will see how large scale developments like Conjunto Nacional, Copan, and Viadutos used the available legislation during that era to create mixed-use spaces with high density, vibrant sidewalks and even allowing income diversity in its areas; an unusual achievement in the developing world. Those buildings to this day are favored by millennials and the Z generation. Six decades later, the finest developers in Brazil are learning from those lessons, from Porto Alegre to Belo Horizonte, with new, multiple initiatives in the last decade.
