The current pandemic has underscored the need for digitization across Africa, and this need will only continue to grow. 

The Africa Speaker Series aims to showcase the possibilities and benefits of digitization, highlighting what has been achieved across the continent, and to provide inspiration for business and national development through the application of technology and digitization across various fields.  

The series of conversations will focus on:  

  • How the current global landscape has spurred digital transformation in Africa.  
  • Areas/sectors experiencing rapid digitalization and uptake by businesses, industry, and government.  
  • The major challenges to digitization in Africa and opportunities exist to address and tackle these challenges.  

This session will focus on the practical applications of technology and digitization in governance and business, and the impact, and opportunities for the continent.

Dean at IE School of Global and Public Affairs (Moderator)

Susana Malcorra is Dean at IE School of Global and Public Affairs and was previously Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Republic of Argentina. Becoming in 2012 Chief of Staff for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon gave her invaluable experience for both humanitarian aid and peacekeeping operations. She has handled complex negotiations as a diplomat in various countries. She coordinated the mission to eliminate Syrian chemical weapons and the first ever Ebola emergency response in West Africa.

COO, Ecobank Foundation

Carl Manlan is the Chief Operating Officer of The Ecobank Foundation. He is an economist with over ten years of experience in health, finance and project implementation. He has worked with communities across Africa and developed systems to improve public health financing, mainly at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Presidential Economic Advisor - Government of The Republic of Namibia

Mnyupe, who is a chartered accountant by profession is the outgoing managing director of Allan Gray Namibia, an asset management firm.

He served as a member of the Presidential High-Level Panel on the Namibian economy.

He will also assist the president in the execution of post-COVID-19 recovery plans for Namibia.
