Organized in collaboration with the CFA, CAIA, IE Venture Capital & Private Equity Club, and IE Hedge Funds Club, we invite you to this year’s Finance Day. This 2-day experience showcases the finance programs at IE Business School, highlighting what you can gain and learn from our Masters, how can you further develop a career in finance, and opportunities to attend a variety of activities such as workshops, masterclasses, and panel discussions on Private Equity and Venture Capital. You will also get to network with current students, alumni working in the various finance sectors, professors who are experts in their field, and other high-level speakers specialized in Private Equity or VC.

This event is an open invite for all students who want to discover what areas of finance they want to get into, develop their knowledge in finance, or learn how to build their careers in finance.

17:30 – 18:30 Alternative Investments Market Outlook by CAIA Association – William (“Bill”) J. Kelly (Aula Magna, Maria Molina 11)

Bill J. Kelly is President and CEO of the CAIA Association. Previously, Bill was CEO of Boston Partners and one of seven founding partners of the predecessor firm, Boston Partners Asset Management. Bill’s career in institutional asset management spans over 30 years where he gained extensive managerial experience through successive CFO, COO, and CEO roles. Bill, a tireless advocate for shareholder protection and investor education, is a member of the CAIA Association board and an Advisory Board

According to Preqin, 84% of investors plan to increase their allocation into alternative investments over the next five years, but do they fully understand the opportunities and risks? In this presentation we will explore that very issue and how this industry needs to focus on an even higher level of professionalism and transparency.

18:30 – 19:00 Panel Discussion 1 – Private Equity Investment Strategies in ESG and traditional Private Equity (Aula Magna, Maria Molina 11)

Franco Imperial graduated summa cum laude from IE’s Master in Advanced Finance program. He is an Investment Analyst in Renewable Energy & Cleantech at Arcano, investing in the sustainable infrastructure space (e.g. renewable energy and water) through primaries, secondaries, and direct co-investments in Europe and North America.

Lance Contento did his MBA and Masters in Advanced Finance at IE and is CFA Charterholder. He is a Principal at Three Hills Capital Partners (THCP) and currently a board member of Pelostop, WPI and Byron. Lance has a strong background in private debt investing, having served as an Associate in Goldman Sachs’ Special Situations Group, where he specialized in special situations lending in the U.S. middle market. Prior to his experience at Goldman Sachs, Lance held investment banking roles at Cogent Partners and Banc of America Securities.

Alvaro Arizcun has his MBA degree from MIT Sloan in Boston, as well as an MSc in Industrial Engineering from the Universidad Pontificia Comillas. Alvaro joined THCP in 2018 as an Investment Associate. Before joining the firm, Alvaro spent 3 years at MCH Private Equity, a leading private equity firm covering the Iberian Peninsula.

19:15 – 20:00 Panel Discussion 2 – The Good the Bad and the Ugly in PE – Industry veterans share their stories: Carlos Gila, Oaktree Capital Partners; Ramon Betolaza, Black Toro Capital; Alexander Wit, Phi Industrial (Aula Magna, Maria Molina 11)

Carlos Gila is Senior Advisor to Oaktree Capital and a professor at IE Business School. He specializes in helping owners, boards and CEOs solve problems, to grow, govern, activate and execute comprehensive strategies to strengthen their companies while lowering risk.

Ramón Betolaza is Managing Partner at Black Toro Capital and alumni of the IE Business School’s MBA program, graduating summa cum laude. He has over 18 years investment experience in distressed, special situations and rescue and stabilization of companies across the cycles in Europe, U.S. and Asia. Previously he was Director at Credit Suisse in the Distressed Securities Group, the predecessor group to MatlinPatterson, of which he was Partner from ineption.

Alexander Wit is Founder and Managing Partner at PHI Industrial with an MBA from Harvard. Alexander started PHI Industrial Acquisitions’ operations and has led PHI´s acquisitions and divestments. His background is operational, having started various companies in the past, and has been involved in managing change at various organizations.

Ignacio de la Torre is the Academic Director of the Masters in Finance programs and Professor at IE Business School. He is Partner and Chief Economist at the Spanish Investment Bank, Arcano Partners. He has over twenty years of experience in diverse fields of investment banking at Arcano, UBS and Deutsche Bank within the departments of Capital Markets.

12:00 – 13:30 Value Investing Workshop with Christian Freischütz (V-G03, Velázquez 130)

Christian Freischütz is a Madrid based investment professional, who holds a Bachelor's in Economics degree from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and is a Director of Value School and CIO;CFO at Ennos Value. He has several years of experience in finance amongst firms like Gestion, LIFT Investment Advisors, Mirabaud, Interdin and BBVA.

The Workshop is intended to give insights about the art of Value Investing, practised by many investors like Warren Buffet. Christian Freischütz, Director of Madrid based Value School, will talk about investing in general, the history of Value Investing and how investors can value their investments by looking at intrinsic valuations, moats and behavioural finance.

Irina Zilbergleyt, Director, Head of Education and Advising, and Professor for Master in Finance, will be talking about the Private Equity and VC industries and the skills necessary to break into them. We will also have alumni coming to speak about their experiences in their sector.

16:00 – 16:45 ABC of Sustainability Investing by CFA Institute Spain - Ana Claver Gaviña, CFA

Ana Claver is Executive Director and Head for Robeco Iberia & Chile. Prior to assuming this role, she was part of the sales team targeting the Spanish and Chilean market since 2006. Ana joined the firm from Morgan Stanley where she worked on the private banking business.

Safeguarding economic, environmental and social assets is a prerequisite for a healthy economy and the generation of attractive returns in the future. The investment industry is moving from creating only wealth to creating wealth and well-being. In 2015, the sustainable investing landscape changed with the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. In this presentation, we will explore how Sustainability investing means many things to many people, and their investment goals can vary greatly and therefore how Asset Managers must offer highly flexible approaches and solutions.

José María Hernanz, Principal JME Ventures, Joaquín Rebuelta Principal Kibo Ventures, and Ivan Semenov Investment Manager Axon Partners Group and IE Master in Finance alumni will discuss the challenges of the current market, including fundraising prior to an anticipated recession.

Aris Xenofontos IE Alumni and Principal at Seaya Ventures, Sebastián Fernández-Medrano Principal at Samaipata, Ross Strachan Principal at Adara Ventures, and Brooke Richardson Investor / Growth Accelerator Manager at TheVentureCity will discuss their experiences prior to and in the Venture Capital industry, including best deals, mistakes made, lessons learned, and how to best position yourself for a career in VC.

Martin Varsavsky is a serial entrepreneur, mentor, professor of entrepreneurship at Columbia Business School and investor. As a founder, he has built five successful companies: Viatel, Jazztel, Ya.com, Fon and Prelude. Viatel, Jazztel, and Ya.com all sold for over $700m. As an investor, he has backed fascinating companies such as 23andMe, Eolia, Smarthings, Tumblr and Aura Biosciences.

Martin will discuss his experience at every level: entrepreneur, VC and fund of funds. This will be followed by a 15 minutes Q&A.
