ScaleUp Yourself: You May Not Be Interested In Scaleups But Scaleups Are Interested In You!

As Scott Galloway, the NYU Professor and once a Guest Professor at IE, writes in his book The Algebra of Happiness  “Market dynamics trump individual performance”. If the force is with you, then you will be successful even if you perform badly.  The trick is to be in the right place at the right time. Then you don’t have to be brilliant to succeed. Total win!

Entrepreneurship is primarily associated with startups but there is another class of innovative company called the scaleup which combines the growth opportunity of a startup with the structure of a corporation. They can be hard to find and even harder to join but once you know how to get their attention, they are amazing places to work.  

In this Scaleup Yourself session, we will look at eight areas where companies are exponentially scaling up for the post-COVID-19 economy. These are Artificial Intelligence, Automotive, Augmented & Virtual Reality, Bitcoin & Blockchain, Cybersecurity, Digital Health, Financial Services, and the Internet of Things.

Specifically, we will use the analysis of CB Insights to identify the names of these scaleups, understand the problems they are trying to solve, and ask would they be good places to work in the future?

Professor Joe Haslam is the Executive Director of the Owners Scaleup Program at IE Business School in Madrid, Spain. This is a program specially designed for small and medium sized companies that want to scale. He is also the presenter of the High Impact Online Program "Scaleup! How to Successfully Manage Growth" and the Academic Director of the Global Scaleup Program, a joint course offered by IE with the American University of Beirut. In the International MBA, he teaches an award winning elective called "Scaling Up Your Startup".

In 1998, Prof Haslam was on the founding Team of Marrakech, a Dublin based e-procurement company that raised over $75m in Venture Capital and scaled to over 250 people. He is the co-founder and Chairman of Hot Hotels, the first company from Spain to be accelerated by the Techstars program in the USA (Boston, Summer 2015). He was born in Ireland and has an MBA from IE Business School. He has lived in Madrid for the past 15 years.
