Google and Antitrust: What the Android and Search Cases Reveal about Competition Law

European competition authorities have launched another case against Google, this time concerning Google's Android mobile operating system.  Interestingly, Android was launched to create a second viable smartphone platform to Apple's iOS.  Europe also continues to pursue complaints against Google concerning Google's Internet search practices.  For their part, U.S. antitrust authorities dismissed a potential case against Google for search and do not seem to be addressing Android.  As Google is perhaps the most important company in the worldwide digital economy, these different treatments highlight important issues in applying competition law -- both in the different interpretations that European and US authorities have of proper competition law and in different market dynamics.
