About the Speaker

David Stein has a history of excellence in the homebuilding, resort development, and hotel industries.

At age 22, Stein became the youngest project manager in ITT Levitt and Sons' history, then the world's largest homebuilding company.

As an entrepreneur, he successfully developed Monarch Beach, California. This billion-dollar resort community included a Ritz-Carlton, a St. Regis hotel, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. links golf course, office and retail space, private and public parks, and 2,750 homes.

Since 1989, his company, The Stein Group, has been active in the development and operations of projects and companies in Europe.

He was the co-founding partner of Medgroup, one of Spain's largest resort community developers, including the internationally renowned La Manga Resort.

From 1999 to 2009, Stein also developed Stein Hotels and Resorts, a leading boutique hotel owner/operator of small luxury hotels in Europe. The company hotels numbered 23 in 8 European countries, including The Cadogan in London, The Dylan in Amsterdam, Le Colbert in Paris, Château Eza on the French Riviera, Villa Mangiacane in Tuscany, Gran Hotel Son Net in Mallorca, Finca Cortesin in Marbella, Port Palace in Monte Carlo and Grand Hotel Rodina in Sochi, Russia.

Stein also created and later sold Luxury Lifestyle Hotels and Resorts, a sales representation company representing 113 boutique hotels in Europe and the award-winning international magazine, "LUX."

Mr. Stein served as the President of the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation based in Washington, D.C., for 12 years. He was the co-founder, along with Kerry Kennedy, of the RFK Center for Human Rights and is also a founding member of the Board of the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights in Europe.  Mr. Stein has also served as the President of the Orange County Homebuilding Association, was a member of the Democratic National Committee, a Trustee of The Claremont Graduate School and University, and was the founding President of the Claremont Graduate School of Politics and Economics.

After moving to Mallorca, Stein founded and Chaired Projecte Jove, the first drug treatment and prevention program for adolescents in Spain. Stein has also served as a member of the World Travel and Tourism Council.  He was Chairman of the Board of Pacific National Bank from 1981 through 1992.

About the Design and the Environment Lecture Series

The designer of the 21st century needs to be aware of the environmental agenda from the very beginning of the design process and must raise this awareness into acknowledging the impact of every decision.
Being a “sustainable designer” is not limited to obtaining certifications such as the Leed or Bream. It goes beyond official recognition. We strongly believe that the most sustainable square meter is the one that has not been built, and if built, the one that is used intensively throughout the years.

Join us for this lecture series and learn the role of strategic design in a more sustainable future.
