FinTech Disruption in the Financial Sector - USA & Canada

The financial industry is experiencing an important moment of disruption; thanks to technology, the frontiers between industries have been blurred. Start-ups and big tech players have entered into endeavors which used to be reserved traditionally for banks. In this session, we will analyze what main factors are driving these changes and what global trends can predict where we will see the creation of value in the future. 



Luis Maldonado, PhD

Luis works as a professor at IE Business School and as a Consultant specialized in Digital Financial Services and Sustainability for the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the World Bank, among other institutions. He also server in different boards in regulated financial sector companies.

He has developed his entire career in the fields of economics and finance, where he has held senior positions both in the public sector, he was advisor to the Minister of Finance in Spain, and in the private sector. He has an extensive experience in consulting, he was Director of Strategic Consulting for the Financial Sector at PwC in Spain, as well as in the financial industry, as CSO for one of the largest retail banks in Spain.

He has also a long international experience. He worked for five years at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in Washington DC, where he held different positions, as advisor to the Managing Director and in the Monetary and Financial Markets Department. More recently, he was Managing Director of the PwC-IE Business School Financial Sector Center.

He is also co-founder of an IT firm specialized in Big Data & Analytics and a fintech trading platform.

Luis Maldonado holds a PhD in Economics Cum Laude from Alcalá University, he is State Economist for the Government of Spain, and he holds both Degrees in Law and in Business Administration from ICADE University. He also has a postdegree in Business Administration from Georgetown University and a Global Senior Management Program from the University of Chicago and IE Business School.
