Mathematics in the era of AI: a discussion with Marcus du Sautoy, Eva Gallardo, and Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón

What sparks a student's interest in math? How do we teach math nowadays versus 30 years ago? Why do math communicators sometimes connect more effectively than traditional teachers? And how does math influence our daily lives?

Join us for a compelling evening with three esteemed mathematicians: Marcus du Sautoy, Oxford University Professor, internationally known for his approachable insights into complex math; Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón, University of La Rioja Professor, a dynamic communicator who bridges the gap between math and the public; and Eva Gallardo, Universidad Complutense Professor, the president of the Real Sociedad Matemática Española.  Additionally, Marcus will introduce concepts from his latest book, "Thinking Better," showcasing mathematical strategies that have impacted our history. This is a unique opportunity to understand the role of education methodologies better when learning (and teaching) mathematics. Secure your spot and be part of the conversation.

Organizers: IE School of Science and Technology and Real Sociedad de Matemáticas Española (RSME)

Schedule:

18.00 - Panel discussion + Q&A

19.00 - Drinks & networking

Location: IE Tower

Marcus du Sautoy is the Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford. He is the author of eight books including his most recent book Thinking Better: The Art of the Shortcut. He has also published a play I is a Strange Loop which was performed at the Barbican in London in which he was also the lead actor. He has presented numerous radio and TV series including a four-part landmark TV series for the BBC called The Story of Maths. He works extensively with various arts organizations bringing science alive for the public from The Royal Opera House to the Glastonbury Festival. He received an OBE for services to science in the 2010 New Year’s Honours List and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016.

Eva Gallardo, is the second woman to lead the Real Sociedad Matemática Española in 2022. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Sevilla and has conducted research at institutions in the USA and the UK. In 2010, she joined the Universidad Complutense de Madrid as a professor and now holds a chair position there and in the research institute ICMAT. Her main research interests are focused on Complex Analysis and Operator Theory and regarding professional services, she has served as a referee for the Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Prospectiva (ANEP) (Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia- Gobierno de España), la Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Calidad (ANECA), and for several international research agencies including the Research Executive Agency (REA) of the European Commission, The Fund for Scientific Research FNRS (Brussels-Belgium), Swiss National Science Foundation or the OPUS and PRELUDIUM International Review Panel (Polish Science Academy). She was named President at the Biennial Congress of the Real Sociedad Matemática Española, highlighting her prominence in mathematics.

Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón is widely known for his YouTube channel "Derivando," dedicated to learning mathematics in a fun and approachable way. Eduardo holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics and is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computing at the University of La Rioja since 2001. His research focuses on computer algebra; one of his latest projects used algorithms to enable biomedical image processing and ensure network reliability. Eduardo's work includes numerous articles and collaborations with Spanish and European mathematicians. Moreover, he shares his passion for mathematics through lectures and workshops attended by thousands of people worldwide. In 2013, he won the FameLab scientific monologue contest, has participated in several TED talks, is a founding member of Big Van Científicos Sobre Ruedas, and has written several mathematics books like "Inteligencia matemática" and "El árbol de Emmy".

Irene Alda is the Academic Director of the Bachelor in Applied Mathematics at IE University. With a Ph.D. in Photonics (Physics) from ICFO, Barcelona. After her Ph.D., Alda assisted scientists in refining their research papers and securing pivotal grants. Her combination of academic excellence and practical expertise ensures the smooth running of the Bachelor in Applied Mathematics at IE University.
